Want to know how to make a dream catcher?

Learn practical tips for creating dreamcatchers: step‑by‑step guidance, expert pointers & best practices.

Materials

There are many types of materials you can use to create a dream catcher, or you can make a web out of almost anything. Here are some suggested items used for dreamcatchers:

  • Metal Rings

  • Red willow,

  • Sticks

  • wooden rings

  • wire

(For items created for sale, we use metal rings.
We do not make or sell traditional dreamcatchers for profit. Our work is inspired by teachings and storytelling, while respecting cultural boundaries and responsibilities..)

Tip

Use hot glue to secure your ribbon to the ring. Be careful for the heat but it holds better and dries quick so you dont have to wait for it to set or dry.

Wrap your ring

Wrapping the ring creates the foundation for your dreamcatcher and sets the tone for the entire piece.

I use double-faced satin ribbon to wrap my rings. I love the variety of colours available, and using good-quality ribbon helps your creation last longer over time.

You can also use other materials, such as:

  • Yarn

  • Macramé cord

  • Fur

  • Twine

  • Leather

I typically use leather only for smaller ring sizes (1″–4″), as leather can become costly on larger rings.

The Web

Starting Your Web

Once your ring is wrapped, you’re ready to begin the web.

The web is built by looping your string or sinew around the ring in evenly spaced points, gradually working inward. There is no single “correct” way to create a web—techniques and meanings vary between Nations, families, and teachings.

Take your time, work with intention, and allow the web to form naturally. Imperfections are part of the process and make each piece unique.
